The "ancient privilege of Athens" allows Egeus to "dispose" of his daughter as he wishes; she is his property, so he can "estate" her to anyone. Shakespeare introduces his theme of unstable love relationships in the first Act and uses the elements of literature to further develop his theme.

The triple wedding at the end of Act IV marks the formal resolution of the romantic problems that have beset the two young couples from the beginning, when Egeus attempted to force his daughter to marry the man he had chosen to be her husband.

For a time, this attraction to beauty might appear to be love at its most intense, but one of the ideas of the play is that real love is much more than mere physical attraction. How does love relate to the world of law and reason? As with the other contrasts one cannot thrive without the other.

As the plot develops she overcomes her fears and takes a risk by running away with her father in order to satisfy her heart, with her plans being revealed to her closest friend Helena.

The play is partly about order and disorder. He follows literary traditions, but also develops his own style. Unfortunately, they reveal their secret to Helena who tells it to Demetrius in an attempt to win back Demetrius heart. The woods proves more appealing, however, because it allows for freedom, while the city, with its law that a woman who refuses to marry the man whom her father chooses may die, demonstrates the evils of a restrictive culture.

Much of the play takes place at night, and there are references to moonlight, which changes the appearance of what it illuminates. In the midst of this conflict Hermia is given a choice till her wedding between either obeying her father, or being sent to a convent or even being executed under Athenian law.

Puck comments on this with one of the most important quotes: When Demetrius cannot persuade Hermia to love him, he attempts to rape her. Shakespeare links the romantic relationships with male authority and aggressiveness. The character development that occurs in this play occurs in relation to the development of the plot.
